To promote the development of renewable energy, KMB and LWB announce that about 22,000 solar panels will be installed in the depots, buses and bus stops by the end of 2021. Up to 10 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity will be generated annually, equivalent to the annual consumption of 2,300 households in Hong Kong, reduction of about 5,400 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. With the largest solar panel system of franchised bus company in Hong Kong, KMB and LWB aim to lead the public transport industry to move forward to the new green era and promote Hong Kong to achieve carbon neutrality.
KMB and LWB’s solar panel system are being installed in depots, bus termini, bus shelters, bus poles and bus double-deck rooftop across the territory. In particular, it includes:
● The rooftop of 11 depots;
● 10 bus termini;
Solar energy devices provide energy to lighting and mosquito repelling devices. The installation will be completed by the end of 2021. All bus stops of KMB and LWB will be equipped with lighting devices to provide clear bus route information for passengers.
Except the existing 59 buses featuring solar panels and the newly purchased buses in the future, KMB announces that more than 1,000 mid-life buses with around eight years’ service will equip with 2 mm-thin solar panels to supply electricity to air-conditioning and ventilation systems. The installation makes a quarter of bus fleet of the new energy system.
The installation will utilise over22,000 solar panels in total and reduce about 5,400 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. “KMB and LWB attach great importance to sustainability, we incorporate new energy into our daily operations and the community and make a concerted effort in promoting Hong Kong to be a low-carbon city,” Roger Lee Chak Cheong, Managing Director of KMB.
